No one knows the NICU until they're in it. The beeps, the waiting, the love so enormous it has nowhere to go. The people around the parents want to help and mostly send nothing, because nothing feels right.

NICU Grounding Cards come as a deck of 20, or a pocket pack of ten, for mum, dad, birthing partner or parent. One side holds a short line to steady them. The other holds a simple practice they can do in the chair by the cot, in the car park, or at 3am at home. The practices take under two minutes and nobody on the ward would notice. The deck comes gift boxed, so you can send it even when you don't know what to say.

They were made by Bex, after her son was born twelve weeks early. A share of every sale goes to The NICU Space, a UK community interest company she volunteers with.

If you're the one in it

You don't have to wait for someone to send these.

The cards don't ask you to feel better. They give your hands and your feet something to do while the monitors do theirs. Pick one up when the alarm goes and your whole body braces. Pick one up in the car park before you go back in. Pick one up at home, weeks later, when you're back and not yet settled, because that part is real too and the deck was written for it.

They are not a treatment and they don't claim to be. They are plain words and two minute practices, written by someone who sat in that chair.

The pocket pack

Ten lines for the ward

These are the ten cards in the pocket pack, in order. Each has a practice on the back.

  1. I am here.My body is here.
  2. The machines are doing their job.I am doing mine.
  3. My touch, however small,is the most powerful thing in this incubator.
  4. Leaving the ward is not leaving them.My love stays in this room when I go.
  5. I can hold love and grief at the same time. Both are allowed.
  6. I am doing everything I can. That is not nothing. That is everything.
  7. My fear is trying to protect me.I can thank it and stay here.
  8. My nervous system is learningthat the danger has passed.
  9. I am not behind. We are moving at exactly the pace we need.
  10. I am not failing.I am recovering.

Questions people ask

Can you send a gift to a NICU?

Check with the unit first. Most won't allow flowers, balloons or food near the cots. A small, flat, sealed gift is usually fine. Sending it to the parents' home address is the safest bet, and it's there for the nights they go home to.

What do you say to a NICU parent?

Less than you think. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere." Then show up again next week, and the week after. The cards do the rest when you're not there.

Is this a gift for a NICU mum or a NICU dad?

Both. Every card is written for mum, dad, birthing partner or parent. Nothing on them assumes who gave birth.

Are the cards religious or clinical?

Neither. Plain words, and short practices based on how the body settles when it's braced, like pressing your feet into the floor or breathing out longer than you breathe in. They describe, they don't diagnose. They are not a treatment and don't claim to be.

Who makes NICU Grounding Cards?

Bex, a NICU mum in West Yorkshire, England. She made them after her own time on a neonatal unit, when she couldn't find anything that spoke to where her family actually was. She is not a healthcare professional, and says so on the cards.

Can I buy these for myself?

Yes. Many do, during the stay and after it. The pocket pack is the one for the ward. The full deck is the one for the months after, when everyone else has stopped asking.

Do they ship outside the UK?

Yes, through Etsy, with tracked international delivery. UK delivery is free.

Where to buy
